LG is now the number 1 tablet display provider

LG Display has taken a commanding lead of the competitive media tablet display panel market, revealed research group IHS.

The South Korean company garnered just over 50 percent of the global market this year, confirmed Vinita Jakhanwal, IHS senior manager of small and medium displays. The closest competitor was Samsung Mobile Display, which held 35 percent. Taiwan's Chimei Innolux Corp. turned in at no. 3 with just nine percent.

The analyst chalked up LG's win to being the primary screen provider for Apple's iPad, which has sold over 30 million units worldwide. He added that the company's panel production capacity outstrips its competitors' operations, giving LG a significant advantage.

Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet also boast LG-made displays, but were not counted in the report, which covered the second quarter of 2011. However, Jakhanwal concluded that three-way competition should cement LG's place at the top of the game.

"Apple, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble have very different offerings in the media tablet market - but they all depend on LG Display because of its advanced in-plane switching (IPS) display technology," he said. "LG Display’s amorphous silicon LCD panels utilizing IPS technology offer faster response speeds, wide viewing angles up to 179 degrees, and no after image - all while consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCDs."

Amazon revealed last week that consumers are snatching up one million Kindle devices every week. Prior to the Kindle Fire's November 15 debut, the company claimed it boosted production in light of staggering demand.
