Micron announces $3 billion investment in NAND and DRAM fab

American chip giant Micron plans to invest about $3 billion by 2030 on expanding its NAND and DRAM production fab located in Manassas, Virginia. The new facility should employ an additional 1,100 new people over the next 10 years.

Initially the facility's clean room will be expanded and Micron expects that work on that will be completed in the fall of 2019 and the production ramp should be ready in the first half of 2020. Expansion of the clean room will be no more than 5% of Micron global clean room space footprint and it will be primarily used for “enablement of DRAM and NAND technology transitions”.  Besides that, it will also be used for a modest capacity increase.

Additionally, Micron will also add a global research development center near the facility where memory and storage solutions for automotive, industrial and networking markets should be developed. The center will include laboratories, test equipment and a staff of approximately 100 engineers.
