Microsoft "Courier" tablet revealed

Just like that, we now know more about Microsoft's tablet computer than we do about whatever new device Apple is planning.

Gizmodo broke the news on the so-called "Courier," a touch-screen booklet consisting of two screens, each measuring roughly 7 inches and separated by a hinge. Microsoft hasn't confirmed the product, but Gizmodo has photos and video from within Microsoft's research and development division, and the site claims it has more information in store.

"Over the next couple days we'll be diving much, much deeper into Courier, so stay tuned," the blog writes.

What we know so far: Courier is operated with either a stylus or fingers, supporting multi-touch and gestures. A hinge running between the two screens holds an iPhone-like "home" button, and there's a camera on the outside of the booklet. It's possible that the device will use an inductive charger, similar to the Palm Pre's Touchstone charging dock.

Microsoft is reportedly working on the user experience now, but Gizmodo suggests that it will be considerably more complex than what Apple could be shooting for with its rumored tablet, with "multiple graphically complex themes, modes and applications." In other words, the Courier will follow the typical Microsoft pattern of rich but complicated, while Apple's tablet will sacrifice complexity for simplicity.

It's said that Microsoft's top executives and engineers are working on the project, including J Allard, who oversaw development of the Xbox. Obviously, there's no pricing or release date to speak of at this point.

If Gizmodo's report is accurate, I'm surprised to see Microsoft stepping into the tablet game so early. The company's M.O. is to wait until a technology proves itself before stepping into the market. With the exception of e-readers, which also haven't taken off yet, there's little evidence that consumers are interested in touch screen computers that are bigger than a phone or media player but smaller than a computer.

That said, the Courier looks pretty cool. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.
