Microsoft launches free web-based streaming version of Xbox Music

Several months after its  introduction, the web-based version of the music streaming service Xbox Music can now be used for free. Microsoft has posted this on their blog, together with the announcement that Xbox Music will become available on iOS and Android.F or the mobile applications a Xbox Music Pass subscription of $9.99 a month is required, a price comparable to other streaming services.

The Music Pass also offers access to thousands of video-clips that can be watched with the Xbox 360 and the upcoming Xbox One console.

Microsoft announced that the free streaming audio of Xbox Music can be accessed using a webplayer.  The service is advertisement supported, just like the free version of popular streaming service Spotify. The free tracks are also available in the Xbox Music app in Windows 8.

The company announced that the free version will get more restrictions after six months, but has not disclosed what those restrictions will be. Microsoft also revamped the GUI of the Windows Xbox Music application that should be part of the Windows 8.1 update.

As competitors like Amazon and Google offer a Cyberlocker service,  Microsoft is likely to release a similar service too.  Using a Cyberlocker it's possible to store purchased tracks online with the possibility to stream them to all kinds of devices.
