Microsoft launches Managed Desktop service

Microsoft today announced its Managed Desktop service for enterprise customers. The service combines Microsoft 365 Enterprise with leased hardware and cloud-based device management from Microsoft.

Earlier this year there were already rumors that Microsoft was working on its own version of desktop-as-a-service. With today's announcement the tech giant itself confirms the rumors with the release of Microsoft Managed Desktop (MMD).

MMD combines Microsoft 365 Enterprise, device-as-a-service and device management from the cloud in a single product for enterprise customers. According to Microsoft the product is designed for customers who want to spend less time on managing their computers, so they can spend more time on expanding their business.

The new service works on what Microsoft calls “modern hardware” which are devices with additional security and remote control functionality. Initially this will be Microsoft's own Surface devices, but later the line-up should be expanded with devices from Dell and HP.

The idea behind MMD is that users can immediately login and have their data available on a device provided by Microsoft. The device detects based on the data which information and configuration is needed and will then install the required applications through Windows Autopilot without any interference of IT staff. Because Microsoft manages the device, it's always up-to-date and secure, and the company is able to gather analytical data.

With the analytical data, Microsoft can learn about malware or erroneous applications on the device of one customer, which can then help to protect and solve issues on devices of other customers. The data can also be used to determine whether a device is ready for a next feature update or not because of issues with third-party software.

Microsoft has tested MMD with several customers in the United States and United Kingdom, but on a small scale. Next year, MMD should become available in Australia, Canada and New-Zealand. In the second half of 2019, MMD should become available in more countries.
