Microsoft: We're never upgrading PCs to Windows 10 without permission

Microsoft denies that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers are updated to Windows 10 without users consent. According to the company the reports are inaccurate and the company argues that users who are unexpectedly upgraded to Windows 10 might have pre-selected to upgrade to the new OS.

Earlier this week we wrote that many Reddit and Twitter users complained that their Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers were upgraded to Windows 10 without their consent. According to the reports the culprit was KB3035583, the infamous "Windows 10 downloader for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1". Because this update was marked as important, it was thought to be automatically installed on computers with automatic updates enabled.

In a statement a Microsoft spokesman insists an upgrade to Windows 10 only starts with explicit user permission, "We shared in late October on the Windows Blog,we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10. As stated in that post, we have updated the upgrade experience to make it easier for customers to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place. Customers continue to be fully in control of their devices, and can choose to not install the Windows 10 upgrade or remove the upgrade from Windows Update (WU) by changing the WU settings".

To The Inquirer Microsoft also said reports of updates without users consent are inaccurate and that the company has, "updated the upgrade experience for some of our customers, who had previously reserved their upgrade, to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place".

If Microsoft is right, it's unclear how it's possible that so many users feel their computers are upgraded to Windows 10 without their consent. It's possible the way the upgrade is presented was unclear to a large group of users.
