Microsoft is behind in the tablet market, and is trying to make up for lost time and opportunities by releasing two variants on their Windows 8 operating systems. Win 8 will run on x86/64 hardware, but Windows RT is designed to run on ARM hardware. ARM is found on many types of tablets and smartphones.
Microsoft may be making a fatal error in their pricing structure however. VR-Zone reports that many OEM vendors at Computex Taipei are saying that the cost for the new Windows RT operating system will be in the $80-95 range, with most saying $85. Compare this to Android, which costs nothing.
With this constraint, there may be few Win RT tablets under $500, and those that are under that price range may lack many features needed to compete with Apple and Android.
