Microsoft rebrands Xbox Music as Groove

After a leak and some wild speculation earlier today, Microsoft officially announced they're renaming Xbox Music.

The speculation started after the name Groove popped up in a Windows 10 app, mostly because there already was a music player named Groove in the Windows Store. Now Microsoft has cleared up any confusion on their blog, they're not buying Groove, nor selling Xbox Music, they just rebranded their streaming music service. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said the rebranding was necessary because the Xbox brand didn't resonate with non-Xbox users, "I don't have an Xbox, why would I use Xbox Music?" Microsoft's streaming music Subscription, Xbox Music Pass, was also renamed to Groove Music Pass, still priced at $9.99 a month or $99 a year.

It's unclear what Microsoft's position concerning the other Groove Music player is, a Microsoft spokesperson said "we have nothing more to share at this time." They did secure the groovemusic.com domain and the @GrooveMusic twitter handle apparently.groove-logo

The Groove branding does explain the new logo that was introduced in a previous Windows 10 build. The Music app switched from an icon with headphones to a record player with what looks like a stylized letter G.

The blog post also officially announced that Xbox Video app is now Movies & TV, something Windows Insiders knew for a long time now.
