Together with the release of a new Windows 10 Insider Build, Microsoft released an installer for ‘Windows 10 S’ that allows installing the feature limited version of Windows 10 on any computer. The only requirement is a Windows Pro or Enterprise license. The installer is only 5.5MB and converts an existing Windows 10 install to a Windows 10 S system. Once installed users can join the Windows Insider program to receive preview build of the OS.
In July this year, Microsoft released Windows 10 S only for developers. Today is the first time the OS can be tested by consumers.
Windows 10 S is a feature limited version of Windows 10 that can only run apps downloaded from the Windows Store. The OS should compete with Google’s Chrome OS and Microsoft mainly targets it for use in schools and other educational institutions. The OS should also run well on less powerful computers.
