Previously Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would be able to download updates through computers in the local network. Soon also computers on the internet will be included. The feature is called Delivery Optimization and will not only download OS and app updates but also upload updates to other computers. The feature appears to be similar to Bittorrent, it breaks downloads  into small pieces and uses what is assessed as the fastest, most reliable source for each piece of the file.

The feature takes several things in account to assure performance as Microsoft explains, "Delivery Optimization is also mindful of local disk usage, use of cellular networks, battery life, and other network activity. It is also integrated with and builds on the existing security measures in Windows Update and Windows Store to check the authenticity of each file downloaded from other PCs."

Delivery Optimization should be especially useful for users with challenging network conditions, Microsoft claims.

The Redmond software giant also claims that downloading updates through the local network of companies lessens bandwidth consumption up to 50%. The new download method is enabled by default on a new Insider release of Windows 10.

When Microsoft will bring the feature to regular Windows 10 builds is unknown. The local network update download feature is already in regular builds and also enabled by default.
