New Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU protects smartphones with artificial intelligence

American chip manufacturer Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 820 mobile CPU that is able to detect malware and malicious apps using artificial intelligence. The CPU features a technology called Smart Protect that monitors app behavior in real time. If the chip, expected for the first half of 2016, detects malicious or suspected behavior it will show a warning.

Qualcomm argues its technology makes smartphones more secure and better protected against malicious apps, malware and adware. Because the technology resides in the processor and doesn't need an internet connection it's more energy efficient than running antivirus apps.

Another benefit is that regular antivirus apps work by comparing code or apps with a list of known leaks or malware which has a drawback.  By simply adapting the code or apps, cybercriminals can easily circumvent the detection methods.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Smart Protect technology uses artificial intelligence to separate between normal and dangerous app behavior. This way the technology can detect any app or code that is potentially dangerous, even if cybercriminals make changes.

The chip giant makes the technology available to smartphone manufacturers and antivirus companies which can use Smart Protect to protect smartphone users.
