Nintendo requires always-online for latest Mario game in fear of piracy

Nintendo's latest mobile game Super Mario Run will only be playable with a working internet connection to protect the game against piracy, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto told Mashable in an interview.

The game will be released next week for iOS and can't be played in an airplane without Wifi or other places without an internet connection. Miyamoto explains that the limitation is due to the copy protection of the game. Nintendo fears piracy when the game can be played offline.

The network connection should also make sure that 'to keep all game modes to work together', according to Miyamoto, although it's unclear what he means with that.

Super Mario Run is mainly a single player game but it has a 'Toad Rally' modus that makes it possible to play with friends. Nintendo previously considered to offer the singleplayer modus called 'World Tour' without the always-on requirement, but that was too complicated, according to Miyamoto.
