Nokia plans just one Linux phone for 2010

No. 1 phone maker Nokia plans to release only one Linux-powered smartphone in 2010, a Reuters source learned, creating doubt as to whether or not the struggling phone company will be able to compete with other smartphone makers.

Although it remains the No. 1 phone maker in the world, it has struggled the past few years as consumers switch from regular mobile phones to smartphones made by Apple, Research In Motion, HTC, and Samsung.

If this report is true, it's a shame that Nokia will release just one Linux-powered smartphone next year.  There was widespread speculation Nokia would attempt to move from Symbian towards its Maemo OS, based off of the Debian Linux OS, with analysts initially expecting multiple Maemo phone launches next year.

Nokia launched the N900 smartphone earlier in November, its first Linux smartphone as it attempts to regain marketshare in an increasingly competitive market.  Rumors began to appear after the N900 launch that Nokia would complete its switch from Symbian to Maemo by 2012.

Nokia has remained quiet about its plans in the years to come, but company executives understand something drastic must be done before Apple, RIM, and other competitors threaten its No. 1 phone manufacturer ranking even further.  It'd be wise for the company to announce a 12-month and then 24-month outline to consumers, so everyone is aware what the company is working on.

Despite such high interest in the Maemo OS, Nokia has said it still remains dedicated to Symbian, but there is doubt as to whether or not that is a wise choice.  I believe Symbian had its place -- and remains relevant among regular smartphones -- but the company must try and adapt to evolving needs of consumers.  If it is unable to make the necessary adjustments, expect the company to  continue to struggle.
