Panasonic to release Blu-ray discs that last 50 years

The single layer discs (LM-BR25MDP) can hold 25 GB and the dual layer discs  (LM-BR50MDP) have a capacity of 50 GB and they can be written at 6x. The discs contain Panasonic's Tafukoto technology on both sides which should protect them against degradation by moist.

Other protection comes from the regular Blu-ray protection that protects against scratches and fingerprints and additional quality control. With both technologies and the additional inspection combined the Japanese electronics giant claims the discs can achieve a life expectancy of more than 50 years. The discs should become available at the 13th of September in Japan, it's unclear if they will become available in other parts of the world.

The website AVwatch estimates a retail price of 2500 Yen ($25.65)  for the 50 GB disc and 1500 Yen ($15.35) for the 25 GB disc.
