PSPGo hacked to support ISO images of ripped UMD games

For all the portable gaming enthusiasts out there who own a PSPGo, it seems that a Christmas gift has been delivered just for you. A Chinese Hacker going by the name liquidzigong has released a custom homebrew app named "Prometheus" that functions as an ISO loader.

This is significant due to the fact that the PSPGo cannot play UMD games like its PSP predecessors. Sony gave the cold shoulder to physical media with the PSPGo, making it an all-downloadable game content platform. All official games for the PSPGo must be purchased online and downloaded over the net, until now...

With the Prometheus app copied onto the internal storage of a PSPGo, users can now load game ISO's onto a Sony Memory stick (flash storage card), placing them in an /ISO/ folder at the root of the card. The Prometheus app can then be launched like any normal homebrew app, allowing you to select and launch any of your ISO's loaded onto your Memory stick.

One of the main complaints of PSPGo users was that Sony had not ported over all of the UMD based PSP games to the PlayStation Network for downloading and playing on the PSPGo. Due to this fact, PSPGo users running Prometheus can now play many more games than users who are running a stock PSPGo firmware. Yes, you read that right, the only way to get access to the full library of PSP games on your PSPGo is to hack it.

Gamers can now play just about any PSP game that has been released on UMD media, as long as they can get their hands on an ISO rip of that particular game.

Ironically, this development could actually make the PSPGo more popular than ever, even though Sony is sure to condemn the activity and most likely take some legal or technical actions to try to block users from utilizing this hack.

On the other hand, Sony might not be too worried about the ole PSP if they are indeed working on a PlayStation Phone for release in the near future, which is very likely.
