Samsung intros Galaxy Spica Android phone

Samsung today announced it is shipping the Google Android-powered i5700 Galaxy Spica smartphone, the company's newest addition to its growing Android portfolio.

The Galaxy Spica has a 3.2-inch touchscreen supporting 320 by 480 resolution, 800 MHz CPU, 3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, and 128MB of internal memory.  Furthermore, measuring 4.5" x 2.2" x 0.5", the Galaxy Spica is a bit smaller than its predecessor, the Moment.

The Galaxy Spica is using Android 1.5, while the Motorola Droid smartphone has the 2.0 edition.  Certain features available with the Droid are not available with the Galaxy Spica, such as Google's new turn-by-turn navigation software.

Most notably, the  Galaxy Spica has full embedded support for DivX video playback.  According to Samsung, this is the first Android phone that has native DivX support, which may pressure other manufacturers into supporting the video format.

"Samsung has made a great effort to strengthen our smartphone line up with a wide range of innovative products for every user," Samsung VP JK Shin said in a statement.  "The Samsung Galaxy Spica, powered by Android, is the perfect fit for users who want to enjoy a powerful and fast mobile experience."

The phone is now available in Europe and Eastern Europe, and will find its way to the Middle East and Asia.  It's unknown whether Samsung will release the smartphone in the United States.
