The privacy policy of Samsung Smart TVs with voice recognition advises users to not talk about personal or sensitive subjects next to the device as it can be captured and transmitted to a third party. The Smart TV's privacy policy also reveals what other data Samsung collects.
Samsung Smart TVs with voice recognition constantly listen for voice commands. Not only does the TV listen for commands, it also collects data to evaluate and improve the feature. In the privacy policy Samsung writes, "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition."
Besides collecting that kind of data, Samsung also captures other data such as "Smart TV usage and device information, including, but not limited to, IP address, information stored in cookies and similar technologies, information that identifies your hardware or software configuration, browser information, and the page(s) you request."
In addition the TV also collects search queries you type when searching for video content, as well as the applications you've used.
The privacy policy continues with, "In addition, if you enable the collection of information about video streams viewed on your Smart TV, we may collect that information and additional information about the network, channels, and programs that you view through the Smart TV."
While you can turn off personalised recommendations for which the TV collects the data, "Samsung may still collect information about your usage of the Smart TV for the purposes described in this Samsung Privacy Policy."
Also, if you turn off voice recognition it doesn't mean Samsung won't continue to collect data, the company states about that, "while Samsung will not collect your spoken word, Samsung may still collect associated texts and other usage data so that we can evaluate the performance of the feature and improve it."
