Samsung readies mainstream 960 EVO NVMe SSD - up to 3,000 MB/s reads

Samsung is reportedly working on a NVMe EVO SSD lineup that should be cheaper than the current 950 Pro series but perform equally or better. Samsung's EVO series SDDs are targeted for mainstream users by using relatively inexpensive NAND.

The new SSD lineup should go by the name 960 EVO and consist of a Samsung Polaris controller and 3D V-NAND from the Korean electronics giant. The 960 EVO will use 48 layer 3D V-NAND just like Samsung's PM961 SSDs which also uses the same controller.

The probably nearly identical PM961  is able to achieve specified read speed of 3,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,150 MB/s. Random reads are specified  up to 360,000 IOPS and random writes up to 280,000 IOPS 4K.

The 960 EVO should become available in a M.2 NGFF 2280 form-factor and as PCIe card. The SSD will use the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and supports the NVMe protocol.
