Samsung unveils data center SSD line up with SATA and NVMe drives

Samsung today announced its data center SSD lineup which consists of the 860 DCT, 883 DCT, 983 DCT and the 983 ZET. The Korean electronics giant states its new lineup reduces latency and data delays for enterprise and business big data applications.

  • The 860 DCT is designed for servers requiring SSD-levels of sustained performance and is suitable for read-intensive workloads. It allows for a lower TCO compared to hard disk drives (HDDs) and offers high capacities up to 3.84 TB. The 860 DCT is a SATA drive designed for content delivery network systems and comes with a 0.20 DWPD rating.
  • The 883 DCT is designed for servers used to safeguard critical data, including power loss protection and end-to-end data protection. It utilizes the SATA interface and will be available in a number of capacities ranging from 240GB up to 3.84TB at a 0.8 DWPD rating.
  • The 983 DCT uses the NVMe interface and comes in two form factors, U.2 and M.2.  Samsung specifies sequential read/write speeds of up to 3,000/1,900 MB/s (U.2) and 3,000/1,400 MB/s (M.2). The 983 DCT is designed for real-time big data analytics applications and comes with a 0.8 DWPD rating.
  • The 983 ZET is a cache memory solution that offers low latency and high reliability. It is designed for storage solutions like NoSQL DB such as application workload case, and it comes with a 10 DWPD rating. Samsung specifies sequential read/write speeds of up to 3,400/3,000 MB/s.

All the drives, except one, use Samsung's regular V-NAND. The only exception is the 983 ZET which will use Low Latency V-NAND. Depending on the capacity, the drives also have a DRAM cache. The SATA drives use Samsung's MJX controller, the NVMe drives use Samsung's Phoenix controller.

All of Samsung’s new data center SSDs can be used with Samsung's SSD Toolkit software, which can be used for firmware updates, data erasure, over-provisioning setup and to check the disk status. The 860 DCT, 883 DCT and 983 DCT are available now and the 983 ZET will become available at the 24th of September this year. The entire line is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
