Seagate and Cloudian Partner to Provide High-Density Private Cloud Solution

Seagate Technology and Cloudian have forged a partnership to provide a private cloud storage platform for advanced users.

The product — Cloudian HyperStore Xtreme, Powered by Seagate — has storage density, scalability, and efficiency for advanced private cloud infrastructures. With its ultra-high capacity (multi-petabytes to an exabyte), the product aims to address both artificial intelligence (AI) and network-edge usage.

Cloudian's AWS S3-compatible object storage software combined with Seagate’s latest high-density storage systems resulted in this cost-efficient product. It has up to 70% lower total ownership cost than Storage-as-a-Service (SaaS) varieties.

Built for Heavy Use

The enterprises' need for large-scale storage requirements is the driving force behind private cloud adoption. Companies in AI/machine learning, healthcare, scientific research, and surveillance media and entertainment create and receive data. With workloads that can reach petabytes, these users encounter unique challenges in keeping and protecting large volumes of data.

SaaS providers can give scalability and flexibility that can address the storage issue of these companies. However, their cost and data access and transfer speeds could become significant concerns when used in “super-capacity” mode. The data managed using this service is also prone to security risks.

While traditional storage solutions offer better performance and security, they also fail to comply with these requirements. Aside from being costly, reliability and data access are also probable issues.

With private cloud infrastructures, companies can receive the best of both worlds. They can enjoy the scale and flexibility benefits of SaaS and the performance and security advantages of on-premises storage.

Cloudian HyperStore Xtreme has a storage capacity of up to 1.5 PB in a 4U enclosure. In a single data center rack, it can give up to 18 PB of storage.  This storage capacity has 83% greater density than other systems.

With under a half-cent per gigabyte per month in cost, this product can bring huge savings. Some companies even say they can save up to 70% by investing in this product instead of  SaaS.

Addressing the S3-Compatibility Requirement

Aside from performance and cost-efficiency, the Cloudian HyperStore Xtreme is also AWS S3-compatible. AWS S3 is currently the industry standard in cloud storage, according to Ken Claffey, a senior executive at Seagate. Claffey said Seagate sees a tremendous opportunity in helping large enterprises realize private cloud's full potential and benefits.

Seagate and Cloudian cited the IDC report showing private clouds as the fastest growing sector of IT hardware infrastructure. The report forecasted that spending on the solution to increase by 58% between 2018 and 2023. This figure is higher than the 48% growth in public cloud spending.
