Seagate announces world's fastest SSD

Seagate Technology revealed their latest SSD today, one which they say is the world's fastest SSD flash drive, with throughput of 10GB per second.  This is a production ready unit, already in the hands of some of Seagate's customers, though not available to the general public until this summer.

This SSD meets the standards of the Open Compute Project, a non-profit organization which shares designs of data center products among companies.  Facebook is a prominent member of the project, and reduction of costs and power used are primary goals.

Seagate claims that this new SSD is 4GB per second faster than any previous SSD on the market.  It uses the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol instead of the slower SATA interface.  The 10GB/s unit will use a 16 lane PCIe slot, but Seagate is also developing a unit which will use an 8 lane PCIe slot.  The speed will be reduced to 6.7GB/s, but they state that this will be the fastest SSD in the 8 lane category.

Projected prices for the drives were not revealed in the press release.
