Sony confirms online pass for all future games

It looks like every Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios game is going to require an online pass to play multiplayer. Online passes often come in games and require the owner to input a code in order to access online content like multiplayer. If someone purchases a game preowned, and the code has already been used, a new code must be purchased often at a fee of $10.

Monday Sony confirmed the inclusion of an online pass with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. The news of the inclusion of an online pass in the upcoming release was originally announced by Sony Spain's Juan Jiménez.  Jiménez stated that the company is making use of this feature to combat piracy.

The fact of the matter is that these online passes are more an effort to combat the used game market than piracy. When a game is sold used by a company like GameStop the original publisher doesn't see a dime from the purchase. By requiring an online pass it has the potential to net the company at least $10 from the sale of a used game with multiplayer features.

Sony officially confirmed that all of their games moving forward will require an online pass. Other studios like Electronic Arts (EA) have also gone down this path. Microsoft does not currently require an online pass for all of their Microsoft Studios published titles but one can imagine it won't take long for them to institute that policy.

In a statement to Destructoid Sony said,

"Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) games with online functionality.  We will provide further information in the future. "
