Sony is making a Chrome OS laptop

Recently unveiled documents indicate Sony is preparing a Vaio laptop that will run Google's Chrome OS instead of Windows. If this ends up being official it would mark another big name company putting out a Chromebook which Google must be hoping will improve the visibility of their platform.

The Chrome OS Vaio was discussed in documents recently submitted to the FCC. Those documents indicate the machine would have a 11.6 inch display, WiFi and Bluetooth, USB ports, an HDMI output, and a SD card slot.

The FCC documents were first noticed by Laptop Reviews. That site seems to think the computer will be powered by a ARM-based processor. Laptop Reviews notes in their article that the FCC documents list the CPU for the Chrome OS Vaio as a T25. That could mean the processor is a NVIDIA Tegra 250 T25 which sports a dual-core 1.2GHz Arm Cortex A9. All of the current Chromebooks use the Intel Atom CPU.

Sony isn't the first laptop manufacturer to launch a Chromebook. Both Samsung and Acer put out Chrome OS powered laptops last year. The problem is those systems didn't get a ton of consumer attention and thus didn't sell particularly well.

Google has to be hoping that having Sony on board, developing a Chomebook, will help get their operating system a little more attention from consumers. With Windows 8 launching soon and Mac OS X getting another new iteration soon it might be hard for Google to get consumers to switch over.

Do any of you folks have an interest in Chrome OS? Would you buy a laptop that came shipped with it? Let us know what you think in the comments.
