Toshiba launches Blu-ray recorders

Having lost the HD format war, Toshiba is embracing Blu-ray with the launch of Blu-ray players and recorders along with a Blu-ray/TV combo. We first reported on Toshiba going Blu-ray last year.

The new models are Toshiba's first tentative steps into the Japanese Blu-ray market after the demise of the HD-DVD format. Toshiba's new HDTVs include the 26-inch 26R1BDP and 32-inch 32R1BDP, both with 720p native resolution. Each has a side-mounted, slot-loading Blu-ray drive with BD-Live support, plus they support recording television onto a USB external hard drive.

Three new hard drive recorders - the D-B305K, D-B1005K, and D-BW1005K - can record HDTV broadcasts to Blu-ray discs or the hard disk. The top-end model gets both a 1TB drive and a VHS tape deck.

All products are scheduled to ship in Japan in mid-February.
