TV manufacturers: '3D no reason to buy TV' - OLED and 4k are

TV manufacturers Sony, LG and Samsung will focus mainly on OLED and Ultra HD and state that 3D technology is no reason for consumers to purchase a new TV. The manufacturers warn that this doesn't mean that 3D isn't important but that it had its peak time.

There are currently more technologies that require further development. According to a Samsung spokesman everyone who wants to have a TV with 3D technology has already bought one. Instead, the company foresees more demand of Smart TVs which also have 3D as an extra. It also expects that 3D will remain a feature for more expensive TVs. Nevertheless, Samsung will continue to try to improve 3D technology.

Samsung states that about 40% of the TVs they sold in 2012 featured 3D technology while LG estimates that 20% of the TVs they sold have 3D technology although 60% of their models support it. LG expects that in the future it isn't about choosing 3D, OLED or Ultra HD instead they expect that we'll see all technologies combined: OLED TVs that support Ultra HD and 3D.

OLED  technology promises better brightness, viewing angles, response time and power efficiency.  Ultra HD has a resolution of 3840x2160 and is four times as sharp as HD content.

According to a Sony spokesman the 3D TV market is saturated. Like Samsung they also think that everyone who wants 3D already has a TV that supports it. The technology has become available 3 years ago and according to a Sony spokesperson the focus will now be on new technology.
