Verizon Wireless has officially confirmed that it will offer the very impressive HTC Incredible Google Android-powered smartphone. The device will head to its network later this month, as Verizon looks for a new flagship phone.
The HTC Incredible runs Google's Android 2.1 OS, has a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 8-megapixel camera, and GPS, Wi-Fi. HTC isn't using a physical keyboard with the Incredible, however, which may turn away some potential customers.
The hardware powering Android on the Incredible is impressive: including new Sense UI, Facebook, Flickr and Twitter apps, along with access to Skype Mobile, Verizon's official NFL Mobile, and other software.
The phone will be released on April 29th, with Verizon accepting pre-orders beginning on April 19th. It will cost $199.99 (after two-year contract agreement and $100 mail-in-rebate).
I've enjoyed testing some of HTC's previous phones, and I'm glad the company plans to release more phones for Verizon and AT&T. HTC had the Droid Eris and Motorola Droid available for Verizon, but the HTC Incredible will become the premier Android-powered device Verizon will promote.
Verizon will soon get the Nexus One -- a Google phone that is made by HTC -- that has similar features, except it only has a 5-megapixel camera. Verizon has been unable to secure the Apple iPhone, and AT&T remains focused on promoting the iPhone for as long as it has the popular device.
The Motorola Droid has had a strong run as Verizon's flagship phone, but it will be interesting to see how well the Incredible sells this summer. It's possible some customers will choose Droid over Incredible since it has a physical keyboard -- something I've always preferred over touchscreen phones.
