Verizon has highest scores in call quality

A mobile phone study completed by J.D. Power and Associates indicates Verizon Wireless has top marks in call quality, topping AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Alltel.

Verizon had the highest scores in the Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions, the study indicates. The service topped the J.D. Power study in 2008 as well, with the lowest number of dropped calls, failed initial connections, and late/missing text messages.

Earlier in the month, Verizon tied with T-Mobile and Alltel as the companies for top customer service honors.

I've had my issues with Verizon, but have had only a few text messages suddenly not arrive, or arrive minutes -- and up to one hour -- after the intended time. Furthermore, the majority of any missed calls were caused by someone else on a different phone carrier, not my VZW connection.

Verizon tied with Alltel and T-Mobile in the Western region -- VZW was good at limiting the number of voice distortion issues, while Alltel controlled the number of failed messages.

In the North Central region, U.S. Cellular had the highest marks, with the lowest number of customer-reported complaints.

AT&T was near the bottom in every region except for the North Central and Mid-Atlantic areas.

The full rankings are available in the J.D. Power charts, which I recommend you briefly look over to see how your wireless carrier ranks in your area.

The mobile industry is changing at a rapid pace, with companies facing increasing pressure from rival companies and federal regulators. Lawmakers are concerned there is possible antitrust behavior and collusion between companies as the cost of SMS messages and data plans increase.
