Western Digital HGST acquires enterprise SSD vendor sTec

HGST today announced that it has acquired enterprise SSD manufacturer sTec. This company is active in the enterprise SSD market and manufacturers its own SSDs.  HGST  (formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies)  was acquired by Western Digital in March 2012 and is now a daughter company of Western Digital.

Western Digital bought sTec for $340 million and with the aquisition it hopes to acquire engineering talent, intellectual property and additional market share.

sTec develops PCIe, SAS, SATA and RAM based SSDs. The 23 year old company also develops caching software, has its own SSD appliance and a line up of embedded solid state disks.  HGST states in the press release that the company is committed o the enterprise SSD market. Besides aquiring companies it also seems to bet on cooperation with other companies. For example, the company is in joint development program with Intel on SAS-based SSD products.
