Windows 10 April 2018 Update now also causes issues with Toshiba SSDs

The Windows 10 April 2018 Update not only caused issues with Intel SSDs, also Toshiba drives are affected. Where the update installed on a system with an Intel 600p series and Intel Pro 6000p series SSD could have serious consequences, the issue with the Toshiba SSDs is less bad.

Although Microsoft delayed the release of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update by several days to eliminate some last second bugs, there are still problems with the version it did release. When the update is installed on systems with an Intel 600p series or Intel Pro 6000p series SSD, serious problems arise. Some users reported that their computer got stuck in a boot loop, after which Microsoft decided to no longer install the updates on systems with the affected Intel drives.

This means those systems are stuck on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update while Microsoft is working with hardware partners on a solution. Interesting is that Microsoft itself is one of these hardware partners, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 with a Core i5 has been spotted to contain an Intel Pro 6000p SSD. The software giant hasn't announced when it hopes to release a fix that also allows affected Intel SSD owners to update their system to the April 2018 Update.

The issue with Toshiba SSDs appears, for now, to be limited to XG4, XG5 and BG3 SSDs. The issue is also less serious than with the Intel SSDs. After the April 2018 Update has been installed, the affected Toshiba drives may experience degraded battery life. Despite that it's less serious, Microsoft writes on its website that it's working with OEM partners and Toshiba to identify affected devices and to block them from updating to the April 2018 Update until a solution has been found.

Microsoft expects it will have a fix ready by June and owners of affected systems with April 2018 Update installed can continue to use their device normally until then. Users who find the degraded battery life unbearable are advised to go back to the previous Windows 10 version, which is Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.
