Windows 10 now installed on 400 million active devices

Windows 10 is currently runs on 400 million active devices, according to Microsoft. The tech giant announced the number during its Ignite conference currently held in Atlanta. In May this year Microsoft announced its latest OS was running on 300 million devices and in March 200 million devices were running Windows 10.

Devices included in these numbers are PCs, tablets, smartphones, Xbox One consoles and even the HoloLens.

Microsoft defines an active device as a device that has been active in the last 28 days, ZDNet writes. While 400 million devices is a lot, it isn't half the number of devices Microsoft is aiming for. The Redmond company hopes to have Windows 10 running on 1 billion devices by 2018.

Especially Windows Phone devices should have helped Microsoft to achieve that goal but so far its mobile OS has been a big disappointment.

Microsoft gave away Windows 10 to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users till the 29th of July this year. Users now have to buy a Windows 10 license, for Windows 10 Home that is currently $119.99.
