Windows 10 won't get cheap or free Bing edition

Microsoft will not release a Windows 10 version of the budget Windows 8.1 Bing edition. Hardware manufacturers got the Bing edition for free or for a reduced price and could be found on cheap laptops and mini PCs. According to the German website Heise, there will be no Bing edition of Windows 10.

With the Windows 8.1 Bing edition Microsoft hoped to compete with cheap Chromebooks. Devices with Bing editions are available for as low as $200. Users who own a device with Windows 8.1. Bing edition receive a Windows 10 Home edition license when they update to Microsoft's latest OS.

The Window s10 Home edition is likely also the replacement for the Bing edition. Microsoft likely provides a discount for Windows 10 Home if hardware manufacturers meet certain conditions, such as small screen show or budget CPU.

The Windows 8.1 Bing edition was cheap or free but had restrictions. E.g hardware manufacturers were not allowed to change the default browser and search engine. For the buyer that didn't really matter, he could still switch browser and/or search engine.
