Microsoft has stated that the Xbox One uses region code protection. The company has told the website DigitalTrends that the Xbox One needs to meet country specific regulatory guidelines which means that the Xbox One and its game swill very likely feature region locks.
This is nothing new, many Blu-ray players and also older consoles use this protection, where if someone in the United States purchases a game in Europe, he can’t play the European game in his US console. Unfortunately some games are only released in specific regions or released before other regions. Due to the region lock it’s usually a problem to import a game if you would like a game in advance or want a game that’s not released in your region.
The Playstation 3 is region lock free, it’s likely that the Playstation will be the same. The region lock was once invented by Nintendo which continues to put region locks on most of it’s hardware and games.
