We will concentrate us with the first tests on the reading capabilities. We will then discover if the reading speed really reaches the 40x.
Our test machine is the following:
- Asus CUSL2 Moederbord
- Intel PIII1000
- Harddisk Maxtor 30GB ATA 66
- 384MB PC133 SDRAM
- Hercules Phrophet 4500 VGA kaart met 64MB.
- 1 LiteOn 24102B
- 1 Plextor 241040A
- 1 Yamaha CRW2100
For our first test we took a CD-Rom benchmark-Utility to measure the drive’s speed. Transferspeed is developed by Smart Projects (Peter Van Hoof) and is freeware
Transferspeed is downloadable at the Smart Projects homesite.
This utility will measure the overal speed of the drive and the amount of kbytes per second.
The LiteOn 24x seems to perform very well, though a littlebit slower than Plextor.
The latest firmware 5S54 gives just a little bit more performance…
The test CD we used to make this test is F-22 LighningIII from Novalogic. It is a PC-data CD of 77min55sec or 684MB without any real protection. Just a routine that check’s wether the CD is in the drive and an Illegal TOC (table of contents).
Average KB/sec test: The average amount of data that is being read in KB/sec. The higher the better.
Average speed according to factor X: The average reading speed of the CD-drive according to factor X. The higher the better.
Highest measured speed according to factor X:The higher the better.
Highest measured Single Command Burst according to factor X: the average amount of data that is being read per second in the burst-mode. The higher the better.
The LiteON 241040A is a very good data-reader, and just like Plextor it can act as a normal CD-Rom drive with above average transferspeeds and reliable readings. We used for this test a LiteON-241040 with firmware V5S0J and firmware V5S54. The newest firmware gives a little higher performance…
The minimal differences with the Plextor 24/10/40 are hardly noticable and are showing that LiteON actually does a very good job in reading CD’s.
On the next page we are going to take a look at some more speed testing with the neroCDSPEED utility.
