LaCie d2 DVD±RW DL external drive with Firewire

 

Reading performance:


For these tests we will use Nero CD/DVD-Speed to read various CD and DVD’s, including audio discs and DVD-media. As already mentioned in the introduction, this drive sports a specified read speed of 12X for DVD’s and 40X for CD’s.

 

Pressed discs:

 

For this test we used a pressed CD-ROM disc containing Creative Blaster Audigy install CD which is close to 74 minutes long. Below you will see the produced result:

 

The LaCie d2 DVD±RW Double Layer had no problems reaching approximately 40x, let us see how this compares to other drives, look below:

CD-Recordable Discs:

 

For this test we made a copy of the original Creative Blaster Audigy install CD. The disc we used was a Verbatim 48X certified CD-R disc manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation.

CD-ReWritable discs:

 

Again we made a copy of the original Creative Blaster Audigy install CD, this time we used a Verbatim Ultra Speed (16-24X) CD-RW disc made by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation.

 

 

The drive did not read the CD-RW discs at full speed (40x); let us compare it to other drives below.

Read Speed. Seek times are great. The other drives listed above (except LaCie),
we used a pressed CD-ROM disc containing PlexTools v1.08 that is exactly 74

Audio ‘“ Digital Audio Extraction:


 


To test the digital audio extraction performance of the
LaCie d2 DVD
±RW Double Layer drive, we again used Nero CD/DVD-Speed to measure the transfer
rate. The audio disc we used is slightly larger than the disc used for the other
tests, to be exact it’s about 78 minutes long (77:43:45).





 


The drive did not reach top speed (40x) reading the audio
disc back, let’s compare the result with other drives:

The LaCie drive is one of the slowest drives performing
this test. The other drives listed above (except LaCie), we used an audio disc
that it’s about 78 minutes long (77:56:57).








And as a last test we used Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to
extract the audio to our hard drive. According to EAC the LaCie d2
DVD
±RW Double Layer drive does not supports caching. But Accurate Stream and C2 Error
are supported.

The drive performed very well in
both burst mode and secure mode tests.



Advanced audio – DAE quality
test:


 


Before we move on to testing DVD read speeds we will take a
last audio test, this time we used the ‘Advanced DAE Quality Test” feature in
CD-Speed.




 


The extracting quality is good, it should support
everything, except reading data from the lead in/lead out and Copy on the fly at
16x.


 


DVD reading
performance:







Again, we will use Nero CD-Speed to measure the reading
performance, this time for various types of DVD discs. The drive should read
pressed single layer DVD-discs at 8X.


 


DVD ‘“ DVD-Video:


 


For our DVD reading performance tests we are going to start
with a single and dual layered DVD video discs. While only 1X speed is required
to watch DVD movies, it’s useful to be able to read the discs at higher speeds
if you’re going to extract (rip) the content of the disc to your hard drive.


 



 



 



As we can see, the drive is locked at 5X CAV reading
for both disc types. This is done to reduce noise when watching DVD-Movies, to
see how the transfer rate is on a Data DVD we used the ‘Dracula II – Die Letzte
Zufluchtsst
é¤tte” DVD-ROM:


 




 


Now we can see, there is no speed limit when
reading the data DVD-ROM and it would probably reached 12X if the DVD-ROM disc

Since the drive is limited to 2x-5x CAV, it’s one of the
slowest drives so far, notice that it is only speed limited for DVD-Video discs,
it will read data DVD-ROM discs at full speed.

For this test we used a Plextor (Taiyo Yuden) 8X DVD+R and
a Verbatim 4X DVD+RW with about 4,4Gb of data. Below are the results:






 



The reading speed was locked to 8x for DVD+R and DVD+RW,

Overall thoughts:


 


The drive is good for data discs, but it could perform
better on Audio-CD and CD-RW. Reading Video-DVD is locked at 5x.
