Microsoft announces updates for the built-in apps for Windows 8

Microsoft is building up a bit of steam heading towards the official release of Windows 8 to the general public on October 26th.  As part of that effort, they are updating and improving most of the built-in apps that come with operating system.  The first app that will be getting this bit of rework is Bing.  The update will be available tomorrow, but there are many more that will be released between now and the 26th.

The improvements in the Bing app are:

  • Richer search results for local content and images
  • Bing rewards integration
  • Use zoom on your search results to see related queries
  • Use the file picker to select an image from Bing to use on your lock screen or in your other apps

Microsoft is promising improved performance and enhanced features in their apps across the board.  The Mail app has been one sore point in reactions around the net, so lets hope they address that one well.  Complete IMAP account support is promised, as is better search within the mail app.

A complete list of the improvements can be found at the MSDN blog.
