The last few months have been a little difficult for OCZ,
with the manufacturer not being able to secure adequate supplies of NAND, and
running into serious financial difficulties. But as I write this article, OCZ's
fortunes have changed substantially with Toshiba buying out OCZ's product line
and intellectual property, keeping hold of the OCZ brand name, but also renaming
it to OCZ Storage Solutions.

With the backing of Toshiba, and their considerable
resources, OCZ is in a very strong position in the SSD market. With OCZ's
considerable SSD knowledge, and Toshiba's NAND fabrication at their disposal,
OCZ stands an excellent chance of becoming a really big player in the SSD
market.

Today I'm taking a look at OCZ's latest consumer grade SSD,
the OCZ Vertex 460. The Vertex 460 utilises their own Indilinx BareFoot 3 M10
SSD controller, coupled with Toshiba Toggle 2 MLC NAND. The Vertex 460 is
available in three different capacities. 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB. The SSD I'm
looking at today is the 240GB version, which OCZ kindly sent me for review.

Software

The software supplied via download from the OCZ website is
as follows.

  • OCZ SSD Toolbox
  • Acronis True Image HD

OCZ SSD Toolbox

The OCZ SSD toolbox provides a means of updating the SSD's
firmware, Secure Erasing the SSD, TRIM the free space on the SSD, and also
providing useful information about the OCZ Vertex 460 hardware via S.M.A.R.T.

Bundled Acronis True Image HD 2013

As I mentioned a little earlier on this page, the OCZ Vertex
460 is bundled with a serial key for Acronis True Image HD 2013. Primarily this
software is provided to allow the consumer to easily migrate their existing
system partition over to their new Vertex 460 SSD. But, True Image HD also has
a few other very useful features. Let's take a brief look at the True Image HD
software.

Note: Not all features are available in the OEM version.
