Toshiba AL13SXB600N 15,000rpm 600GB SAS HDD Review

Here is the result of the ‘full’ HD Tune Pro Read benchmark
which shows the data transfer rate across the whole surface of the disk.  As
expected the transfer rate is greater for the outside of the disk (low Gigabyte
range on the X axis). 

The average read access time was recorded as 5.24
milliseconds.

Please note that typically the data density at the outer
tracks of a hard drive is higher than the inner tracks and reading and writing
will therefore occur at a higher speed.  A hard drive starts reading and
writing at the outer tracks and moves to the inner tracks.

If you look very carefully at the small yellow dots (which
show latency plots) you will see a few outliers.  We’ll come back to this soon.

Here is the result of the ‘full’ HD Tune Pro Write benchmark
which shows the data transfer rate across the whole surface of the disk. 
Again, as expected the transfer rate is greater for the outside of the disk
(low Gigabyte range on the X axis).

The average write access time was recorded as 1.87
milliseconds.

Again, if you look very carefully at the small yellow dots
(which show latency plots) you will see a few outliers (such as the one at just
over 240GB on the X axis and just below 150 MB/s on the Y axis).

Let’s have a look to see if we can observe the occurrence of
these outliers using the OakGate test unit –

You can see the results of a simple test that that writes
1024K blocks across the disk for 3 hours.  It shows a similar picture to the HD
Tune Pro results with Bandwidth decreasing as writes progress across the disk
(though it shows nearly 4 passes).  You can also see some clear downward
spikes, which appear to occur at regular intervals. I believe these downward
spikes correspond to the occurrence of the outliers we see with HD Tune Pro;
perhaps they are associated with passing some form of physical boundary on the
disk.

Here is the result of the Random Read Access benchmark.

It shows a plot of access times for various sizes of
transfer size across the surface of the disk. It also shows average and maximum
random read access times, average transfer speeds, and IOPS counts.

HD Tune Pro Extra Test

HD Tune Pro describes this test as follows:

Random seek:
performs random seek operations across the disk surface

Random seek 4 KB:
performs random seek operations and reads 4 KB across the disk surface

Butterfly seek:
performs seek operations moving from the outer tracks to the inner tracks and
back

Random seek / size
64 KB: performs random read/write seek operations with a random block size
(max. 64 KB).

Random seek / size
8 MB: performs random read/write seek operations with a random block size (max.
8 MB)

Sequential outer:
measures the transfer rate at the outer tracks

Sequential middle:
measures the transfer rate at the centre of the drive

Sequential inner:
measures the transfer rate at the inner tracks

Burst rate:
measures the highest possible transfer speed between the drive and the
interface

Cache test: measures the transfer speed from the buffer of
the drive and shows it graphically. Usually the buffer capacity of the drive
can be determined by checking the position where the speed drops sharply.
