Performance Testing

An OakGate Storage Test Platform was used to perform all of
the performance tests conducted in this review.  You can see an article that
introduces the OakGate Storage Test Platform by clicking here.

The series of tests cover all aspects of performance that
need to be covered, including power consumption.

Sustained Sequential Writes

This test performs 128K Sequential Writes across 100% of the
drives capacity (900GB). Here is the result –

As expected the transfer rate is greatest at the outer edge
of the disk and then slows down gradually as the sequential writes progress
across the surface of the disk.

Please note that typically the data density at the outer
tracks of a hard drive is higher than the inner tracks and reading and writing
will therefore occur at a higher speed.  A hard drive starts reading and
writing at the outer tracks then moves towards the inner tracks.

For interest here is a graph showing the Latency
distribution of every IO that was performed –

Sustained Sequential Reads

This test performs 128K Sequential Reads for 4,000 seconds –

You can see that again, as expected, the Sequential Read
performance drops gradually as the test progresses reading data from the
outside to the inside of the disk. It takes around 3,800 seconds before the
whole of the disk has been read, after which, reads start again at the outside
of the disk (and the performance level jumps back up again).


Sequential Writes

This test performs Sequential Writes for 2 minutes for each
combination of IO Size 0.5K, 4K, 32K, 128K, 1024K and Queue Depths of 1, 4, 32,
64, 128. Here are the results –

You can see that there is little or no increase in
performance beyond a Queue Depth of 32 and that the peak Bandwidth was 272.56
MB/s. This is faster than the drive’s SAS2 predecessor, which peaked at around
232 MB/s. 

 

Sequential Reads

You can see that there is little or no increase in
performance beyond a Queue Depth of 4 and that the peak Bandwidth was 272.64
MB/s. This is faster than the drive’s SAS2 predecessor, which peaked at around
231 MB/s.

You can see that 4K IOPS peaks at 740, which is faster than
the drive’s SAS 2 predecessor that peaked at 500.

Random Reads

Here 4K IOPS peaks at 569, which curiously is a bit slower
than the drive’s SAS 2 predecessor that peaked at 613.
