Performance Testing

An OakGate Storage Test Platform was used to perform the
majority of the performance tests conducted in this review.  You can see an
article that introduces the OakGate Storage Test Platform by clicking here.

HD Tune Pro was used to perform the sustained sequential
write and read tests across the whole of the drive.

The series of tests cover all aspects of performance.

Sustained Sequential Writes

This test performs 128K Sequential Writes across 100% of the
drives capacity (14TB). Here is the result –

As expected the transfer rate is greatest at the outer edge
of the disk and then slows down gradually as the sequential writes progress
across the surface of the disk. The average transfer rate was 204.4 MB/s.

Please note that typically the data density at the outer
tracks of a hard drive is higher than the inner tracks so reading and writing
will therefore occur at a higher speed.  A hard drive starts reading and
writing at the outer tracks then moves towards the inner tracks.

You can see that the write speed drops of significantly
towards the inner tracks.  For interest, this test ran for over 20 hours
because of the huge size of the drive.

I also ran a sustained sequential write test for 3 hours
using the OakGate Test platform.  Here is the result –

Sustained Sequential Reads

This test performs 128K Sequential Reads across 100% of the
drives capacity (14TB). Here is the result –

You can see that again, as expected, the Sequential Read
performance drops gradually as the test progresses reading data from the
outside to the inside of the disk. The average transfer rate was 204.5 MB/s.

I also ran a sustained sequential read test for 3 hours
using the OakGate Test platform.  Here is the result –

combination of IO Size 0.5K, 1K, 2K, 4K, 8K, 16K, 32K, 64K, 128K, and 1024K,
and Queue Depths of 1, 4, 8, 16 and 32. Here are the results –

You can see that there is little or no increase in performance
beyond a Queue Depth of 4.

and Queue Depths of 1, 4, 8, 16 and 32. Here are the results –
