Here is the result of the ‘full’ HD Tune Pro Read benchmark
which shows the data transfer rate across the whole surface of the disk.  As
expected the transfer rate is greatest at the outer edge of the disk (low
Gigabyte range on the X axis).  The Block Size used in this test was 512KB.

The average read access time was recorded as 12.5 milliseconds
and the average transfer rate was 162.8 MB/s.

Please note that typically the data density at the outer
tracks of a hard drive is higher than the inner tracks and reading and writing
will therefore occur at a higher speed.  A hard drive starts reading and
writing at the outer tracks then moves towards the inner tracks.

This can be compared to the results for the Samsung
Spinpoint F1 and the Toshiba AL13SXB600N –

As might be expected the X300 lies between the two but the
X300 is significantly faster than the Samsung Spinpoint F1, particularly with
regard to average transfer rate.

Here is the result of the ‘full’ HD Tune Pro Write benchmark
which shows the data transfer rate across the whole surface of the disk. 
Again, as expected the transfer rate is greater for the outside of the disk
(low Gigabyte range on the X axis). The Block Size used in this test was 512KB.

The average write access time was recorded as 14.1
milliseconds and the Average Transfer rate was 163.1 MB/s.

This can be compared to the results for the Samsung
Spinpoint F1 and the Toshiba AL13SXB600N –

You can see that the Samsung Spinpoint has a faster average
Access Time but that the X300 has a significantly faster average transfer rate.
As expected the Toshiba AL13XBSN600N is faster in both regards.

Curiously, as can be seen in this test, for some transfer
sizes (4KB, 64KB and Random) the Samsung Spinpoint F1 has better random writes
results than the X300.  As expected the Toshiba AL13SXB600N is significantly
faster.

You can see that in this test the results for the X300 are
significantly better than for the Samsung Spinpoint F1, and are not far away from
the Toshiba AL13SXB600N.


PCMark8 Storage Benchmark

This is how Futuremark introduces the Storage
Benchmark found in its PCMark8 product –

Use the PCMark 8 Storage benchmark to test
the performance of SSDs, HDDs and hybrid drives with traces recorded from Adobe
Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and a selection of popular games. You can test
the system drive or any other recognised storage device, including local
external drives. Unlike synthetic storage tests, the PCMark 8 Storage benchmark
highlights real-world performance differences between storage devices.

It is an excellent way to consistently compare
the ‘real-world’ performance of drives. Here are the results –

Fast Copy Read

In this test the Fast Copy benchmark is used to transfer a
folder of 32 JPEG files from the X300 to a superfast NVME SSD.  The limiting
factor here is the read speed of the X300.

You can see that a transfer speed of 204.3 MB/s was
achieved.

This can be compared to the result for the same test being
run on the Samsung Spinpoint F1 –

significantly less than that achieved by the X300.

Fast Copy Write

In this test the Fast Copy benchmark is used to transfer the
